I recall being a solution seeker many times but there is one time that stands out to me the most. It was when I helped a resident from my mother's work at an Assisted Living Facility. The resident has Alzheimer's and is not one hundred percent aware of everything that goes on. One day, while I was volunteering, the resident was not having a very good day and she was slumping around the facility asking for her husband, and where he was at. I absolutely hated seeing how much worry filled her eyes, and how upset she was to not have her husband their with her. Being an Alzheimer's patient she could not recall where she was or why, and to not have her husband their only made her anxiety worsen. She began bawling, and crying out for her husband, it was probably the most saddest thing I have ever seen, she wanted to get out of the facility, and go outside and look for her husband. She continuously tried to sneak out through the front door, but was caught and taken to sit down at her chair. So I decided to go talk to her a hopefully ease her anxiousness, I recalled hearing my mother and other CNA's speaking of a garden they had out back, and how much she adored being out there and gardening. So with my mother's permission, I walked the resident out to the back and assured her that everything would be okay. I talked to her about her gardening, and tried to take the subject of her husband off of her mind. Luckily, she was so happy, and excited about being outside and seeing the flowers, and plants, and vegetable's they had growing in their garden it took her mind off of everything she no longer cried, and called for her husband. I was so glad to know that she wouldn't be in so much emotional pain, because she no longer worried about where he husband was, but now talked to me about her favorite flowers, and plants. We stayed most of the afternoon outside walking around their garden and listening to her stories about life, and how she had lived it. I was so happy that I was able to find a solution to cheer her up and in the process learn much more about her and the kind of wonderful person she is. I would very much spend another day like that again, to me that was as very fulfilling day.
